Intense ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ game reaches Mac this week

The AAA game Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition hit Mac on Thursday. The graphically intensive action role-playing game earned a lengthy list of awards since its original debut on other platforms in 2020.

CD Projekt Red committed itself to the release last fall, saying at the time the game would be out in early 2025. The wait was longer than expected, but is finally over.

Cyberpunk 2077 coming to Mac gamers

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world RPG set in the dark future of Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour, and body modification. Players take on the role of V, a cyber-enhanced mercenary, and embark on a fight for survival. The Ultimate Edition adds Phantom Liberty, a spy-thriller set in the walled-off district of Dogtown.

The game features rockerboy Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves) and FIA sleeper agent Solomon Reed (played by Idris Elba).

It’s already available for Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, and Stadia. And CD Projekt Red finally brought it to Macs running Apple silicon, too.

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on Mac lets players experience the dark future of Night City with smooth gameplay and stunning visuals,” promised CD Projekt Red. “Players can fully immerse themselves with advanced features such as ray tracing, frame generation, HDR tuned for Apple XDR displays, and built-in Spatial Audio with head-tracking exclusive to Apple AirPods.”

What you need to play Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is compatible with a wide range of Macs with Apple silicon, but they must run macOS Sequoia 15.5 or newer and include at least 16GB of RAM.

Plus, CD Projekt Red released a set of suggested hardware configurations, and getting very high fidelity graphics requires an M3 Ultra or M4 Max processor and 36GB of RAM. There’s a chart for more detailed suggestions:

The macOS port of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition launched Thursday, July 17. It is available via Apple’s own App Store as well as through Steam, GOG.com, and the Epic Games Store.

The game costs $82.90 thanks to a 8% discount. The regular price for the bundle is $89.98.

Plus Assassin’s Creed Shadows and more

Apple’s M-series processors are very powerful. So powerful that they provide better performance than most users need. But games are much more demanding than web browsers and email apps, so Apple has been encouraging developers to bring their AAA games to Mac.

Among the most recent launches is Assassin’s Creed Shadows which debuted in spring 2025.

Apple used the MacBook Pro launch last autumn to highlight some of the AAA games available now or coming soon to Mac.
