K2Pictures has released the first trailer for the Look Back live-action movie, a live-action take on the manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto that also received an animated movie.

“Popular, outgoing Fujino is celebrated by her classmates for her funny comics in the class newspaper. One day, her teacher asks her to share the space with Kyomoto, a truant recluse whose beautiful artwork sparks a competitive fervor in Fujino. What starts as jealousy transforms when Fujino realizes their shared passion for drawing,” reads the film’s official synopsis.

What happens in the Look Back live-action trailer?

The trailer doesn’t give away too much, but does reference the original animated film’s trailer heavily, while also calling back to the manga by showcasing both Fujino and Kyomoto, two aspiring manga artists who come together in their passion for wanting to create. The trailer also highlights various scenes pulled from the manga.

The 2024 animated movie based on the manga was a massive hit. The film earned tons of praise from critics, holding a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and was also a big success at the box office. The film grossed over $12 million globally, and was a massive success in Japan, as well.

The live-action version of Look Back will be directed, written, and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda, and is set to release sometime in Japan in 2026. A U.S. release is unclear as of this point. No official cast has been revealed as of yet, either. Kore-eda did release a video alongside the trailer, where he briefly spoke about the movie and what he hopes to accomplish with it.
